It’s been a slow news month in Richmond, and crime reporter Nichelle Clarke is enjoying the downtime when ominous messages and a dead body kick things into high gear. And that’s before the guy with the rifle takes a hospital full of people hostage.
Up to the top of her knee-high Prada boots in leads, Nichelle finds her favorite detectives under pressure to make an arrest, but it doesn’t add up—and ignoring the “why" of this story could cost Nichelle the most important person in her life.
With too much to lose, a shot at the story of a lifetime, and a missing bullet that might be the key to the whole thing, landing this headline could save the day in more ways than one. But can Nichelle dig up the truth before the killer buries her with it?
Interview With LynDee Walker
What inspired you to write your first book?
I left reporting when my oldest daughter was born, and after a few years I missed the newsroom, but not the eighty-hour weeks. So I made up my own newsroom to play in.
When did you first start writing?
Probably about the time I could hold a pencil. I wanted to be Lois Lane ever since I can remember, and I loved reporting, but the long hours weren’t nearly as appealing after I became a mom. I started writing fiction in the summer of 2008.
When did you finish your first book?
In July of 2008.
How did you choose the genre you write in?
I write what I like to read: mysteries with a little humor and romance thrown in.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
There are too many to list, so here are the first five who come to mind: Laura Levine, Hank Phillipi Ryan, Julia Spencer-Fleming, Gretchen Archer, and Laura Lippman.
What book are you reading now?
Bones Never Lie by Kathy Reichs.
My blog is called Tea and a book. I love to just sit, and read a good book, drink tea, have a muffin or maybe a scone.
What is your favorite type of tea?
Iced peach tea.
If you don’t drink tea, what’s your favorite beverage to drink while reading a good book?
I love a really good cup of coffee—my fall favorite is Green Mountain’s Autumn Harvest Blend.
Do you have a favorite food/recipe to go with your tea?
I make pretty killer chocolate chip cookies, if I do say so myself. I follow the recipe on the Nestle Tollhouse bag, with two secrets: 2 Tbsp of extra flour, and softened Irish butter instead of shortening or margarine.
